Sell my car, Brisbane

Why not just put it on Marketplace?

Good question. You can. Plenty of people sell a car privately and do fine. This page is our honest answer to why some people choose us instead — and where we'll say straight out that a patient private seller doing everything right often comes out ahead.

The trade-off, plainly

We're not the best way to sell a car privately. We're the best way to avoid selling one at all.

If your priority is squeezing out the strongest possible result and you've got the weeks to spend on it, Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or Carsales — done properly, with patience and a healthy suspicion of strangers — will usually get there. That's a fair thing to say and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Our pitch is different: certainty, safety, and getting the car gone without it running your life for a month. If that trade-off matters more to you than squeezing every last bit out of the sale, keep reading.

Comparison of private sale, dealer trade-in, and Why Not Sell It
Private sale (Marketplace, Gumtree, Carsales) Dealer trade-in Why Not Sell It
Who you deal with Strangers from the internet, one after another, until one sticks A salesperson, usually while you're also trying to buy a car from them One licensed dealer who reviews your car and talks to you directly
Safety Strangers test-driving your car, strangers at your house, bank cheque and payment scams to watch for Low risk — it happens on their premises No strangers in your driveway, no test drives to arrange
Time and hassle Photos, listing, "is this still available", no-shows, tyre-kickers, haggling Fairly quick, but tied to buying another car One conversation — the garage or a text — then it's out of your hands
Paperwork & legal risk Transfer forms, PPSR checks and disclosure obligations sit entirely on you Handled by the dealer as part of the deal Handled properly, using the correct Queensland statutory forms
Certainty None — a buyer can vanish the day before pickup High, but often bundled into a bigger, harder-to-compare deal A direct offer for your car alone, nothing bundled in
Where you'll likely land financially Often the strongest outcome, if you're patient and careful Often the weakest, especially if it's rolled into a new car deal A dealer's assessment, reviewed and made in writing — not a guess

The private sale reality

Selling privately means becoming, briefly, a small business. You're the photographer, the copywriter, the call centre, and the security guard. Every listing on Marketplace or Gumtree attracts a run of "still available?" messages that go nowhere, a few genuine buyers, and — if you're unlucky — someone who wants to pay by a dodgy bank cheque or a payment method that unwinds itself after you've handed over the keys. Best practice is to meet in daylight at a public place, never take a personal cheque, and confirm funds have actually cleared before the car leaves your hands. Most people who sell privately never have a problem. Some do, and it's usually expensive.

The trade-in reality

A dealer trade-in is quick because it's designed to be. The number you're offered is baked into the price of the car you're buying, which makes the two numbers hard to compare against each other. It's a legitimate way to sell a car — it's just not built for getting the strongest possible number for your old one, because that was never really the point of the conversation.

The Why Not Sell It reality

We're a dedicated buyer, not a trade-in wrapped inside a sale. Christian looks at your car specifically, on its own, and gives you a number for it — not a number tangled up with anything else. No strangers come to your house. No listing sits there for weeks collecting messages that go nowhere. You get an honest look and a straight answer, and if you take the offer, we do the paperwork and take the car away.

The honest bit

We'd rather tell you this than have you find it out later: if you've got the time, the patience, and you're comfortable managing strangers, a well-run private sale will often get you the best outcome a car like yours can achieve. We're not trying to out-negotiate that outcome. What we're offering is to remove the parts of car-selling that are unsafe, slow, or just plain miserable — and to make a fair decision on your car quickly enough that you're not still doing this in six weeks.

Common questions about selling privately vs. selling to us

Is it actually dangerous to sell a car on Marketplace?

Most private sales in Brisbane and across SE Queensland go fine. The risks are real but manageable — strangers coming to your home for a look, strangers test-driving your car, and payment methods (fake bank transfer screenshots, personal cheques) that can unwind after the car's gone. If you do sell privately, meet in a public place if you can, verify funds have actually landed before handing over keys, and never accept a personal cheque.

Will I get more selling privately than selling to you?

Often, yes, if you're patient and do it properly. We're not the highest-effort route to the highest number — we're the route to a fast, safe, certain outcome. Different priorities suit different sellers.

What's wrong with just trading it in at a dealership?

Nothing's wrong with it, but the trade-in figure gets bundled into the price of the car you're buying, which makes it hard to know what your old car actually achieved on its own. Selling it separately — to us or privately — gives you a clean number to compare against.

How is Why Not Sell It different from a car buying service that gives instant online quotes?

We don't generate a number from an algorithm and call it a valuation. A licensed Queensland motor dealer looks at your actual car — the photos, the condition, the details you give us — and decides what he's prepared to pay. It takes a bit longer than a pop-up quote box, and it's a real number from a real person, not a guess.

Do you only buy in Brisbane?

We buy across South East Queensland, not just Brisbane proper. Get in touch and we'll tell you if your area is within reach.
